Mr. Segura was born and raised by immigrant working-class parents in Fontana, California. He navigated unequal treatment and access to quality education while dreaming to be successful enough to support his family. His teachers and college counselors held low expectations for students of color living in poverty and never discussed college as an option. Although his family did not know the path to college, they stressed the importance of education and he became the first in his extended family to graduate from a four-year university when he received a B.A. in History from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has dedicated his life and career to helping scholars of color demand an equitable education and joined Teach For America in Los Angeles where he worked as a preschool teacher with low-income students while simultaneously earning an M.A. in elementary education and a multiple subject credential. He sets high expectations for young scholars in order to secure a strong foundation and a love of learning. He believes strongly in providing a positive early education experience that will help scholars and their parents achieve their goals by prioritizing strong communication to understand the needs of families. He is proud to teach kindergarten at Equitas where students have the awareness, opportunity, and confidence to see themselves as future college graduates. Mr. Segura pushes himself to achieve goals outside his classroom and has raced in several one hundred mile bike events and this summer he hiked the John Muir Trail from Mammoth to Yosemite.
