After School Program

Program Overview

The EXPANDED LEARNING program is committed to offering a balance of academic, recreational, enrichment activities, and clubs. On a daily basis, scholars will receive a snack/supper, and have time to complete homework.  Activities will be held in both the indoor and outdoor spaces of the Equitas Academy Sites.  On a weekly basis, scholars will have the opportunity to participate in “clubs” to expand their interests and activities.  On a monthly basis, scholars will have the opportunity to explore their city by taking field trips.  Additionally, the Expanded Learning Program will provide opportunities for scholars to participate in sports teams or leagues.

Hours of operation

The EXPANDED LEARNING program provides 15 hours of afterschool activities per week, as is required by the state After School Education & Safety (ASES) program grant.  The program hours are as follows:

Daily schedule

The daily schedule will vary by day, age and grade.  For the first month of school, the school directory will be posted at the front desk so you can locate your scholar. If your scholar’s class is at another location, there should be a sign on the door directing you to their current location (MPR, playground, etc.)  At a minimum, Scholars will participate in the following activities daily:

Homework

Our first priority is to engage scholars in enrichment activities, so homework may not necessarily be complete by the end of the afternoon. We encourage parents to continue to check over and finish homework each night, as the purpose of their homework is to reinforce the home-to-school connection.

Snack/Supper

Scholars will receive a supper provided by Better4You Meals.  The Supper is included in the cost of program fees.  Scholars with dietary restrictions will receive alternative meal options as needed.

Recreation Time

Scholars will have at least 15 minutes of daily physical activities.  Weather permitting, this recreation time will be held outside and may include structured activities or free-play.

Literacy/Math Focused Activities

Scholars will receive 45 minutes of supplemental math or literacy instruction.  For elementary grades a KidzLit and KidzMath curriculum will be used to guide the instruction and activities.  Scholars in middle school grades will have the opportunity to choose electives with a math or literacy focus.

On Fridays, Scholars will have opportunities to engage in choice-time activities (Clubs for Elementary Grades and “Majors” for Middle School Grades) that will vary by month.  Some examples of clubs may include:

·       Soccer Club

·       Dance Club

·       Sewing Club

·       Board Games Club

·       Arts and Crafts Club

·       Journalism Club

·       Debate Club

·       Comic Book Club

·       Music Club

Scholars may also take Field Trips on Fridays.  Field Trips are awards for Scholars who are meeting behavior expectations during the EXPANDED LEARNING program and will be communicated to parents via permission slips.
